Q. How do I participate in a discussion board?

Participating in a Discussion Board Forum

Discussion board features within Blackboard allow students to communicate with one another while not requiring all students to be online at the same time. It's also a great way for students to collaborate in the learning process by reading, posting and replying to questions related to their class.

A few terms you will hear quite often when referring to discussion boards include the following:

Forum: A "forum" is a topic or subject where ideas and views can be exchanged.

Threads: The messages and replies being exchanged.

To post a message to a discussion board:

  1. Login to Blackboard using your student ID (as the username) and password.

  2. Click on the "Welcome Page" tab and select a course from the "My Courses" area.

  3. Select the "Discussion Board" button on the left within the side menu panel.

  4. Select the forum you wish to participate in.

  5. Select the "Create Thread" button.

  6. Enter the subject title.

  7. Enter the message you would like to contribute to the discussion.

  8. Click the "Submit" button.

To reply to a message thread within the discussion board forum:

  1. Select the forum you wish to participate in.

  2. Select the discussion thread.

  3. Select the "Reply" button.

  4. Add a message to the forum.

  5. Click "Submit." You'll see now that your reply has been added.

  6. Click "OK."
