Respondus Lockdown Browser Best Practices

Since our last update to Blackboard Learn Services Pack 14, we have experienced intermittent issues with Respondus Lockdown Browser (RLDB).  Client Services, Learning Solutions and Talent Development would like to offer some procedures that would give folks the best possible experience with RLDB.  A definition or two, then some suggestions.  Respondus Lockdown Browser is a web browser just like Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome.  Launching it locks down or disables many of the programs and functions of a computer allowing learners to just take assessments.

RLDB works best when it is launched independent of other programs.  Accessing a RLDB test should be done by directly through the program.  First, quit or close as many programs as normally possible. Second, launch RLDB and use it to navigate to the test.  DO NOT launch a different browser (IE, Firefox, Chrome or Safari) and have it launch the RLDB.

Prepping theTests

At the beginning of each term, each Instructor should go into the RLDB Dashboard from the Course Tools Control Panel in each of their classes.   The Instructor will see one of 3 options in the LockDown Browser column: 1) Not Required, 2) Required or 3) Error [Fix It].

RLDB error

  • If it is “Not Required”, then no action is needed for that test.
  • If the  “Fix It” button is there, click it to restore proper communication between the dashboard and the test.
  • If you see is “Required” and do not see the “fix” button, then you should resave the setting for the test to ensure proper communication.  Unfortunately. This step has become MANDATORY.

To resave settings, click the edit gadget to the left of the test’s name and select “Modify Setting”.

Next, click on “Save and Close”
